Wincanton adds dozens of electric trucks to fleet

Wincanton, a UK logistics firm, has added 24 new electric lorries to its fleet as part of its decarbonisation efforts. The vehicles, sourced from DAF, Volvo, and Renault, will operate over 40 tonnes and be fully operational this summer. Wincanton is also establishing depot-based charging hubs in collaboration with Voltempo and Gridserve. This initiative supports major clients like JD Sports and IKEA, contributing to the Zero Emission HGV and Infrastructure Demonstrator (ZEHID) programme, backed by UK government funding.
The battery electric lorries have been sourced from DAF Trucks, Volvo Trucks, and Renault Trucks. Information on the exact models has not been shared, but Wincanton has confirmed that all the vehicles will be able to operate at more than 40 tonnes and will be fully operational this summer. The order is part of a wider decarbonisation effort by Wincanton, which last year reported an 18-per cent reduction in its scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions.
Wincanton’s new charging infrastructure will be located at lorry depots including Greenford in West London, Portbury, Glasgow, and Northamptonshire. The charging infrastructure has been built in partnership with Voltempo and Gridserve. Additionally, Wincanton is continuing to use its digital transport app EyeQ for fleet optimisation.
The company provides logistics services for major UK brands including JD Sports, Co Op, Britvic, Screwfix, IKEA and more, so any electrification of their fleet has a corresponding effect on the supply chains of dozens of employers. Indeed, Wincanton also has a number of initiatives in place including providing EVs to IKEA for home delivery and Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) as fuel for 85 per cent of the fleet serving Screwfix. These projects both sit under the Zero Emission HGV and Infrastructure Demonstrator (ZEHID) programme which is backed by Department for Transport (DfT) funding and Innovate UK.
Simon Buckley, Knowledge Transfer Manager of Zero Emission Mobility at Innovate UK, said: “It’s great to see Wincanton take delivery of 24 electric HGVs. We look forward to the real-world demonstrations and collaboration as part of Project Electric Freightway eFREIGHT 2030, under the wider ZEHID programme, funded by UK Governmen and delivered in partnership with Innovate UK. These initiatives will generate valuable insights into the future of zero-emission freight in the HGV sector.”
