Walmart collaborates with OpenAI to provide shopping services on the ChatGPT platform

American retail giant Walmart is collaborating with OpenAI to allow consumers to browse and purchase Walmart products directly on ChatGPT.
According to a report by Bloomberg on Tuesday, Walmart's Executive Vice President of Artificial Intelligence, Products, and Design, Daniel Danker, stated in a recent interview that users can simply click the "buy" button in ChatGPT to directly select Walmart products. These products include clothing, entertainment, packaged food, and other items from Walmart and its subsidiary Sam's Club.
Danker said, "We see this collaboration as a new opportunity to provide a more convenient shopping experience for customers where they are." Danker joined Walmart this year from online grocery platform Instacart Inc., where he was responsible for accelerating the application of AI technology within the company.
This feature is expected to officially launch this fall. Currently, fresh food has not been included in the ChatGPT shopping catalog, partly because consumers typically purchase such items on a weekly basis.
At that time, users' existing Walmart or Sam's Club accounts will automatically be linked to ChatGPT, and some products will also come from third-party sellers.
As people increasingly use AI to handle daily tasks—from writing emails to finding recipes—"AI shopping" is becoming a new application scenario. Consumers want to use AI to compare product prices and view comprehensive reviews to simplify their shopping decisions.
Retailers are also actively testing various AI tools to answer customer questions in real-time and help them find the products they need more efficiently.
Currently, OpenAI has also partnered with e-commerce platforms Etsy and Shopify, allowing ChatGPT users to directly purchase products from merchants on these platforms.
In recent years, Walmart has increased its investment in AI across its entire operational system, launching multiple artificial intelligence tools for employees, suppliers, and consumers. Walmart employees are already using AI for tasks such as inventory ordering and scheduling; AI technology has also helped the company improve operational efficiency, such as shortening production cycles for clothing products.
This collaboration with OpenAI not only allows Walmart to further explore new models of AI retail but also deepens the strategic relationship between the two parties. The two companies are also jointly developing an AI skills certification program aimed at training Walmart employees to better use artificial intelligence in their work
