Bezos's ex-wife has once again made a significant reduction in her Amazon shares, with a total sale exceeding $12.6 billion over the past year.
According to a regulatory filing disclosed on October 14, as of September 30 this year, MacKenzie Scott held 81.1 million shares of Amazon stock, a decrease of 58 million shares from a year ago. Based on Tuesday's closing price, the value of this portion of the sold shares amounts to as much as $12.6 billion, with a reduction rate of 42%.
The 55-year-old Scott is known for providing large, unconditional grants to small non-profit organizations, contrasting sharply with many billionaires who choose to donate in a high-profile manner.
According to her Yield Giving website, she donated $2 billion to 199 organizations last year, bringing her total donations over approximately five years to $19.25 billion.
Scott acquired about 4% of the tech giant's shares after divorcing Amazon founder Jeff Bezos in 2019.
Under the terms of their agreement, Bezos retains voting rights over the shares she holds and is required to disclose this shareholding information annually. Despite Scott's large-scale donations, her wealth has actually increased since the divorce due to the surge in Amazon's stock price. She has pledged to donate the majority of her wealth.
The regulatory filing did not specify whether the decrease in share quantity was due to sales or donations. Scott and Yield Giving have not yet commented.
According to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index, Scott's net worth was $41.2 billion before the latest sale. This large-scale reduction further highlights her commitment to philanthropy and reflects the trend of tech giant shareholders monetizing their shares to support social welfare initiatives.
Although the reduction is substantial, Scott still holds Amazon shares worth over $17.5 billion, providing her with ample funding for future charitable donations. Her donation approach is characterized by speed, directness, and trust in the recipients, garnering significant attention in the philanthropic community
