Report: iPhone 18 Pro may welcome dual upgrades: 48 million pixels with a larger aperture

Apple plans to introduce variable aperture technology in the flagship iPhone 18 Pro series in 2026, equipping the 48-megapixel telephoto lens with a larger aperture.

On October 27, media reports citing informants revealed that both the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max models will feature a 48-megapixel telephoto sensor with a larger aperture.

Although specific technical parameters have not been announced, the aperture value is expected to reach at least F/2.0, better than the F/2.2 aperture of the iPhone 17 Pro series. A smaller aperture value means more light intake, which will directly improve shooting performance in low-light conditions.

In addition to the hardware aperture upgrade, the previously rumored variable aperture technology is also expected to be introduced and may be applied to the main camera. This technology will allow users to manually adjust the aperture value based on ambient light, enabling clear and sharp images and videos in different scenarios.

Reports indicate that there has been a significant adjustment in the product launch plan for the iPhone 18. The base model iPhone 18 is expected not to debut at Apple's traditional September launch event but to be postponed to early 2027, possibly making way for Apple's first foldable iPhone.

Product Line Adjustment, Base Model May Be Delayed Until Early 2027

The report also pointed out that Apple's release rhythm may change.

The base model iPhone 18 is expected not to be launched alongside the Pro series in the fall of 2026 but may be postponed to early 2027, debuting alongside a model named iPhone 18e.

Previous reports indicated that Apple is delaying or canceling the base model to free up market space for the highly anticipated foldable flagship product.

Additionally, it is said that Apple is also preparing the iPhone 17e model for early 2026, which may suggest that the "e" series will become a new pawn for Apple to adjust its product cycle and fill market gaps.

Other reports suggest that Apple may skip the naming scheme for the iPhone 19 and directly name the base model iPhone 20. Senior researcher at Omdia had previously made similar predictions.

Since the iPhone 15 Pro Max first featured a telephoto zoom lens, Apple has continued to equip its top models with exclusive hardware upgrades.
