European stock markets are largely closed for New Year's Eve, with markets in the UK, France, and Spain closing early, showing a generally weak performance in the initial stages.
The pan-European STOXX 600 fell by 0.53 points or less than 0.1%, closing at 592.25 points. The UK FTSE 100 index dropped by 6 points or less than 0.1%, closing at 9,934 points; the French CAC 40 index fell by 28 points or 0.4%, closing at 8,139 points; the Spanish IBEX 35 index decreased by 44 points or 0.3%, closing at 17,310 points. The German and Italian stock markets are closed for the holiday. In individual stocks, mining company Fresnillo fell by 2.5% due to a decline in silver prices. Game developer Ubisoft dropped by 2.8%.
