Petroleum contracts rose sharply on Tuesday, driven by forecasts of cold weather in the eastern U.S. The NYMEX February ULSD contract increased by 9.14 cents to $2.329/gal, while March was up 7.07 cents at $2.2931/gal. U.S. oil prices surpassed $60/bbl, with February WTI up 88 cents to $60.32/bbl. The dollar's decline supported energy contracts, making them cheaper for foreign traders. Weekly petroleum supply data will be released on Thursday due to the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday.

Natural-gas futures surged 20% to $3.71 on Tuesday due to a forecast of bitter cold in the Northeastern U.S. Tom Kloza, an oil analyst, stated that the upcoming two weeks will be the toughest test for heating oil and natural gas markets in nearly a decade. The National Weather Service predicts temperatures 15 to 25 degrees Fahrenheit below normal, impacting the market after a previously mild winter. Despite this surge, natural gas prices remain 32% lower than their December peak due to increased production in Appalachia and the Permian Basin.
